Robotic Wheelchairs: Scientific Experimentation or Social Intervention?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Research in robotics is becoming an ever more applied science. Roboticists acknowledge the existence of a role for experiments in their research, but whether the results of such experiments provide useful information to the intended industry or profession remains somewhat ambiguous. In this paper, we particularly consider experiments relating to robotic wheelchairs. There are many prototype robotic wheelchairs, but what level of performance must they achieve before being accepted into mainstream society and how do we verify the reliability of such performance? How can researchers evaluate their systems effectively? We compare and contrast the metrics used by medical practitioners to gauge the mobility status of a patient with those that are popularly used in academia to evaluate robotic wheelchair performance. We conclude that to design and execute successful experiments with robotic wheelchairs, researchers must draw not only on the experience of the intended end users, but also on the expertise of the medical practitioners who assess and support the patients in the day–to–day use of their wheelchairs.

Rephrasing the Problem of Robotic Social Navigation
We put forward the idea that to achieve robotic social navigation, it is necessary to consider different points of view (e.g. passenger and passer-by). We explore this idea in the context of controlling an intelligent powered wheelchairs in an environment with other pedestrians. We present results for a pilot study showing that the assessment of robot behaviour is dependent on these points of v...
متن کاملMobility Assistive Robots for Disabled Patients
2.1 Background Wheelchairs are one of the most important mobility aids for disabled patients and elders. In general, wheelchairs are categorized as manual and powered types. From the viewpoints of movement behaviours, the powered wheelchair can be regarded as a mobile robot (Asai, 2001) if additional environmental sensing components are built and an intelligent motion controller is included. Th...

Autonomous Robotic Wheelchairs in Europe by Spyros G. Tzafestas (National Technical University of Athens) Autonomous robotic wheelchairs (ARWs) represent an important class of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) [1-3] that is receiving increasing attention all over the world. This is due to the strong need of easier wheelchair mobility throughout a longer average life of the handicapped. In the Eur...
متن کاملThe philosophy of scientific experimentation: a review
Practicing and studying automated experimentation may benefit from philosophical reflection on experimental science in general. This paper reviews the relevant literature and discusses central issues in the philosophy of scientific experimentation. The first two sections present brief accounts of the rise of experimental science and of its philosophical study. The next sections discuss three ce...
متن کاملPanel Discussion: Engagement, Trust and Intimacy: Are these the Essential Elements for a Successful Interaction between a Human and a Robot?
As the capability of robots increases, and interactions between humans and machines become more complex, it is important for researchers to consider the potential for an emotional connection to be established between a human and a machine. The panel will discuss areas such as the development of engagement, trust and intimacy during human interaction with embodied robotic characters, and assigni...
